MARC HOFFMAN, B.A., FOUNDER and CEO

Hoffman Educational Group, founded in 2002 by Mr. Marc Hoffman, was designed and developed with a spirit, with a philosophy and with people who are consistently focused on two core beliefs:

1) Always embrace that every student is unique and that learning strategies must be customized for each individual;

2) Help students catch the learning bug – that is, once students begin to see the results of their efforts, they will be rewarded with improved motivation and a desire for continued education.

Hoffman Educational Group team is completely dedicated, even passionate about, helping students learn to learn. Every member is thoroughly screened prior to joining the organization and has a graduate-level degree. The successes of Hoffman Educational Group are determined by our students' abilities to learn, as well as the ability to foster additional motivation to learn.

Marc Hoffman is pursuing another professional step in his child-centered education - a doctoral degree in clinical child psychology. Marc's professional journey has one goal in mind: to help children learn to learn. Marc has invested his life in studying childhood education and its corresponding issues. In fact, Marc's own personal experiences in learning have provided him insight on the value of developing individual learning profiles, as well as an ever-increasing understanding of the trend toward multiple forms of intelligence.

Instead, Marc helps people understand that innovative, customized learning strategies based on students' unique abilities is not only available, but encouraged by educational leaders. Marc is committed to helping every student find methods and strategies to make learning both possible - and fun, too.


MICHELLE, M.A., GENERAL TUTOR, ACADEMIC COACH and DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS

Since graduating from Vassar College, Michelle has integrated teaching into all aspects of her professional life. Michelle prepped students for the SAT Critical Reasoning Test and the LSAT for the Princeton Review, tutored student athletes as a graduate student at the University of Texas - Austin, taught art history courses at UT, trained docents at The Jewish Museum in New York, worked at The Reutter and Riddle Empowered Learning Center, which caters to students with learning and attention problems, and designed museum exhibitions with the education of children as the focus. For the past three years, Michelle has enjoyed coaching students of all ages and abilities with the Hoffman Educational Group.

Michelle specializes in helping clients become the best students they can be. She teaches students how to manage their time for maximum performance, how to efficiently read assignments, how to prepare for mid-terms and finals throughout the school year rather than at crunch time, how to prepare for long-term assignments, how to effectively research for papers and projects, and how to study. In addition, Michelle tutors specific subject areas, in particular writing, literature, history, upper-level French, Italian, Spanish, and German. She assists students prepare and edit applications for boarding school and college.

Michelle is married and a mother of three rambunctious boys under the age of seven. She sees herself as not just a tutor but also a mentor and an additional source of emotional support for her students.

Beginning in 2008, Michelle assumed the role of the Director of Operations at Hoffman Education Group. As such, she communicates with prospective clients and connects them with the best tutor/academic coach for their child, participates in vetting prospective tutors, and manages the day-to-day functioning of the business.


TAMMY, Ph.D., DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION & RESEARCH, LEARNING SPECIALIST and TEST PREPARATION INSTRUCTOR

Tammy’s extensive academic background allows her to wear many hats at Hoffman Educational Group. As an academic coach and learning specialist, Tammy integrates her knowledge of neuroscience and learning theory to help students develop cross-disciplinary skills and strategies that address short-term goals for academic success, as well as long-term goals such as organization, time management, confidence-building, decision-making and self-regulated learning. Because of Tammy’s training, her approach benefits both students with special needs and students who need to fine-tune their approach to school. Tammy helps students with abilities all along the learning spectrum, particularly working with students diagnosed with ADD, ADHD, executive functioning issues, and other issues. As a subject tutor, Tammy’s knowledge embraces the entire spectrum of academic disciplines — from math to science, from writing and literature to social studies and history. In addition to tutoring across the curriculum, Tammy also prepares students for standardized tests, including CMT, SSAT/ISEE, CAPT, PSAT/SAT, ACT, GED, GRE, PRAXIS, and others. Because of the breadth of Tammy’s skills, she can combine assistance in a particular subject area with expertise in how to accommodate all learning styles and issues, helping students to leverage their strengths to counterbalance areas of difficulty.

Tammy is currently working toward a Master's in Clinical Social Work with the intention of adding a therapeutic piece to her work. The insight she is gaining into the interaction of psychology and environment is greatly influencing her work with students. Her approach is getting to the heart of how her students learn in order to help them achieve maximum efficiency and effectiveness in their academic endeavors.

Tammy’s interest in education began as an undergraduate at Bates College. Choosing to pursue a pre-med track, Tammy double majored in Biology and Psychology. Due to her outstanding academic achievements and talent, she was hired by Bates as a science tutor and served as a teaching assistant for several science and statistic/research methodology courses. During her summers, Tammy continued to pursue her passion for teaching, working as a teaching assistant to groups of gifted minority high school students attending summer science camps at Bates.

After graduating magna cum laude, Tammy went on to earn her MA, MPhil and PhD in Psychology from Columbia University. While completing her graduate research, which focused on cognition and neural networks, Tammy kept teaching. She instructed Columbia undergraduates in lecture and lab environments in the areas of psychology, neuroscience and statistics.


JEFFREY, Ph.D., MATH and SAT SPECIALIST

Jeff has years of experience successfully tutoring and teaching students of varying levels of ability and motivation. He adapts instructional methods to meet the unique needs of the individual student and strives to empower each student with the skills and knowledge that will allow them to be effective problem solvers and independent learners. Jeff has an established track record of success in strengthening skills, increasing confidence, and improving the performance of his students.

Tutoring sessions may be dedicated to identifying strengths and needs of the student, formulating effective learning strategies, improving organizational and study skills, and/or providing targeted assistance in specific subject areas of mathematics. Jeff has helped students at various levels (remedial to AP and college) in specific subject areas ranging from Pre-Algebra through Calculus, as well as SAT preparation.

Jeff earned his Bachelors degree from the Johns Hopkins University and his Masters and Doctorate degrees from the University of Virginia. He has held full-time teaching positions at Virginia Commonwealth University, Westhill High School, and King & Low-Heywood Thomas School, and has also taught at the University of Virginia.

CLARE, M.A., SCIENCE and MATH SPECIALIST

Clare has been a science teacher at New Canaan High School for the past four years. She has a degree in geology from Williams College, and a master's degree in teaching from Smith College. She has tutored local middle- and high-school students in many areas of math and science over the past few years, especially chemistry and algebra.

Clare loves to work with younger students on the "whys" of math and science, to develop logical thinking and processing skills in a fun and upbeat way. With both older and younger students, Clare helps with problem solving and organizational skills, common weaknesses she sees in the students she teaches. Clare is also a coach and a class advisor at New Canaan High.


LARRY, M.A., SAT SPECIALIST

Larry is an experienced educator, currently teaching math and social studies in Stamford. He entered the teaching profession after having practiced law for 20 years. Larry says "I've attained a level of satisfaction from the teaching and learning process that I never felt in my earlier career." In addition to his regular classroom teaching, Larry teaches SAT preparation (math, critical reading and writing), Larry helps prepare students for the PSAT, GMAT and SAT II Math, as well as various AP courses and Regents exams.

He has also been doing private tutoring in math, writing, social studies, and study and organizational skills. "As a teacher, I am doing more than showing students how to find the correct answer to a particular math problem. I am teaching them the problem-solving skills that they will use outside the classroom throughout their lives." Larry holds a degree in political science from Hobart College, a law degree from Suffolk University and a master's degree in education from the University of New Haven


JENNY, B.A., M.ED. ENGLISH and SAT SPECIALIST

A veteran teacher and tutor, Jenny currently is a member of the English Department in Westchester County. After Graduating from Harvard College, Jenny received a teaching fellowship, which sent her to work and study at the Bryanston School in Dorset, England. Upon returning to the United States, she earned her Masters in Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and taught history and English at Concord Academy and Dana Hall School in Massachusetts.

Since 1998, Jenny has tutored students in essay writing, reading, and grammar, as well in the SSAT and SAT.

When not teaching, Jenny spends time sailing and writing. She also works with non-profits, particularly organizations that provide education and enrichment to disadvantaged youth.


DAVID, M.A., ACADEMIC COACH and GENERAL TUTOR

I am a veteran teacher and school administrator offering a range of tutoring services for students of all ages. My mission is to help each student achieve success and feel confidence, especially with reading and writing skills. My specialty is promoting excellence in writing. A crucial goal for college-bound elementary, middle and high school students, one that continues for college freshmen. This goal can be met through guided practice and help with revising and editing.

I offer:

  1. Intensive preparation for the SAT and college application process.
  2. Preparation for other "high stakes" exams.
  3. Individual tutoring in writing techniques, with attention to coherence, clarity and versatility as well as correct grammar, usage and spelling/punctuation. To build students' confidence in their ability to express their thoughts adeptly, not just in testing situations but throughout their careers, I emphasize "writing workouts" to develop fluency.
  4. Assistance with study skills and organization in all subjects.
  5. Advice to parents about how to get the best from their children's schooling.

BILLY, M.A., MATH SPECIALIST and ACADEMIC COACH

After graduating from Westhill High School, Billy continued on to St. Johns University where he earned All-Big East Academic recognition as a member of the baseball team. After his freshman year at St Johns, Billy transferred to Williams College to pursue a more challenging academic experience, and also play two sports: Baseball and Ice Hockey. Billy obtained a B.A. from Williams College as a perpetual Deans List student with a cumulative GPA of 3.3. He also captained the baseball team. He is currently tackling additional coursework toward an advanced degree and mastery in secondary mathematics education. Billy has been tutoring students from middle school through high school levels for several years in a wide range of math subjects.

When he is not tutoring; Billy teaches math at a public school in Fairfield County along with coaching baseball. Billy's background in working with so many students at different levels has provided him the experience, insight, and competence to alter his teaching methods and approaches to individual learning styles. Along those lines; Billy's greatest strength is connecting with students, allowing for them to gain the confidence they need to be successful in math. He states that to be an effective one-on-one instructor, you must simplify math concepts so students will not only gain a strong confidence in the subject, but also help them build a trust in their own potential and abilities as a student.


ERIN, M.A., SCIENCE and MATH SPECIALIST

Erin is currently a high school physics teacher in Stamford, CT. She has earned a bachelorÁs degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a masterÁs degree from Columbia University in biomedical engineering. Erin then earned her sixth year degree in secondary science and mathematics education from the University of Bridgeport.

Erin began tutoring her peers in high school. She continued tutoring students in various levels of mathematics and physics (remedial to college level) throughout her college career and continues to this day.

During her physics tutoring sessions, Erin enjoys focusing on the underlying concepts of physics in addition to problem solving and mathematical calculations. She also helps each student focus on organization, time management, and test taking strategies, all of which are necessary to being a successful student.

Erin is also proud to be an advisor for a high school chapter of Building with Books in Stamford.
